Eight people have been killed and nearly 50 injured in a stampede that erupted outside a football stadium in Cameroon ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations.
Fans tried to force their way into the south gate of Olembe Stadium in the capital Yaounde to watch the national team play against Comoros.
Although the capacity of the stadium for 60,000 fans has been reduced in relation to fears of corona virus, the 60 percent fan base has been increased to 80 percent while Cameroon is playing. According to a preliminary report from the health ministry, two of the dead were women, four men and a child.
The Confederation of African Football - CAF has said it is investigating the situation and trying to find out what happened. The tragedy covers Cameroon's two-goal victory over Comoros and advance to the quarter-finals, where they will play against Gambia on Saturday.
