FORMER PRESIDENT OF SOUTH AFRICA, JOCOB ZUMA SURRENDERS TO POLICE.

Former South African President Jacob Zuma has surrendered to police to begin a 15-month jail term after being convicted of contempt of court.

Reports say Zuma went to police on Wednesday night near his home in KwaZulu-Natal. This comes after police warned that they were ready to arrest the 79-year-old former leader if he did not surrender to them by Wednesday.

Mr Zuma was sentenced to 15 months in prison last week after defying a court order asking him to testify in a corruption case, when he was in power for nine years.

The verdict against Zuma, the first against the country's president, sparked legal turmoil in South Africa, with a deadline set for surrender last night.
